Chin Augmentation Washington DC
Chin augmentation, or mentoplasty, is a procedure to treat a chin that is misshapen, receding, or appears too small. The procedure is performed on men and women of all ages, and involves inserting an implant into the chin area to build up a receding chin and restore harmony to your face. Dr. Pittman can also surgically correct the chin by moving the chin bone forward or by reducing its prominence. Chin augmentation is frequently combined with rhinoplasty to enhance the overall facial balance and achieve optimal results. Dr. Pittman will discuss this with you during your initial consultation if it is recommended.
Chin augmentation, or mentoplasty, is performed under either sedation or general anesthesia. An incision is placed under the chin and by gently stretching this tissue, Dr. Pittman creates a space where an implant can be inserted. The implant is made of synthetic material that feels much like natural tissue normally found in the chin. These implants are available in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. This allows custom fitting of the implant and an individualized approach to each patient’s face. After implantation, fine sutures are used to secure the implant and close the skin. Chin augmentation is an outpatient procedure that lasts 30 minutes to an hour.
What to do After Surgery
Immediately after surgery, Dr. Pittman applies a dressing that will remain in place for three days. Some tenderness and post-operative discomfort is expected and can be controlled with pain medication. Some patients may experience a stretched, tight sensation after the surgery, but this usually subsides in a week. Swelling continues to go down over the next 4-6 weeks. Limited activity for the first couple weeks is recommended to avoid jarring or displacement of the implant.
