Breast Lift (Mastopexy) Washington, DC – Maryland - Virginia
Breast Lift (Mastopexy) is a procedure designed to raise the breast by removing and reshaping the skin and underlying tissue. The procedure also can reduce the overall size of the areola and bring the nipple and areola into a more favorable position. Mastopexy is ideal for women with overall breast deflation as a result of pregnancy, breast feeding, weight loss and normal aging. Mastopexy is not designed to add or remove overall volume to the breast. Woman that desire change in the size of the breast may benefit from breast augmentation, breast reduction or mastopexy/augmentation. In your initial consult, Dr. Pittman will perform a series of measurements to aid in planning of the surgery.
Mastopexy is an outpatient procedure that lasts 1-2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. The appropriate technique used depends on the overall size and shape of the breast in addition to the amount of excess skin that needs to be removed. Incisions may be placed around the areola in order to raise its position. A vertical incision may be placed down the center of the lower breast and in the inframammary fold if needed to carry out the skin resection.
What to do After Surgery
Immediately after surgery, Dr. Pittman will apply a dressing that will remain in place for 48 hours. Some tenderness and post-operative discomfort is expected and can be controlled with pain medications and muscle relaxers. Most patients are able to return to normal light activity within a few days. Swelling continues to go down over the next 4-6 weeks. Limited activity for the first couple weeks is recommended and will be discussed in your post-op visits.
