Ear Surgery Washington DC
What is Ear Surgery Meant to do?
If protruding or disfigured ears bother you or your child, ear surgery may be an appropriate option. Ear surgery — also known as otoplasty — can improve the shape, position or proportion of the ear. It can correct a defect in the ear structure that is present at birth that becomes apparent with development or it can treat misshapen ears caused by injury. Ear surgery creates a natural shape, while bringing balance and proportion to the ears and face. The potentially dramatic results obtained from this relatively minor surgery, including the reshaping, reduction in size, creation of symmetry, as well as the “pinning back” of the ears, can improve an individual’s self-esteem. It is the only plastic surgery procedure commonly performed on children who, after the age of 6 years, can undergo the procedure as their ears are 90% or more of adult size.
Preparing for Surgery
Dr. Pittman performs otoplasty under general anesthesia for children and either local or sedation for adults. The procedure lasts between 2-3 hours and is performed on an outpatient basis. Surgery begins with an incision just behind the ear, in the natural fold where the ear is joined to the head. Dr. Pittman will then remove the necessary amounts of cartilage and skin required to achieve the desired effect. After sculpting the cartilage to the desired shape, Dr. Pittman will apply sutures to secure the ear until healing occurs to hold the ear in the desired position. There are several techniques that can be used and Dr. Pittman is more than happy to discuss them with you more in detail during the consultation.
Things to Know After Surgery
A compressive dressing is usually worn for the first 4 days after which it is replaced by a compressive headband for two weeks. There is usually only mild bruising and minimal discomfort, and most regular activities can be resumed after the dressing is removed. Most patients experience some mild discomfort. If you are accustomed to sleeping on your side, your sleep patterns may be disrupted for a week or so because you cannot put any pressure on the ear areas.
