Breast Augmentation Washington DC
Breast Augmentation is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures. Dr. Pittman uses implants to improve the fullness and projection of the breast. The ideal candidates for breast augmentation are healthy, fully developed women that have realistic expectations. Women who are dissatisfied with their breast shape and volume after pregnancy, weight loss or normal aging can also benefit from breast augmentation. In your consult with Dr. Pittman, you will discuss your goals of surgery, learn about the benefits and drawbacks of each type of implant and choose between silicone or saline implants, shaped or round implants and textured or smooth implants. Dr. Pittman will also take a series of measurements to aid in choosing the appropriate size of implant.
Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure that lasts 1-2 hours. The size of implant, type of incision and implant pocket is individualized for each patient based upon several factors. Implants are inserted through a variety of incisions: under the breast in the inframammary fold, inserted through a small incision at the border of the areola, or through the axilla (armpit). The implants can be placed directly under the breast tissue, completely under the pectoralis major muscle or in a “dual-plane” with muscle covering the implant at the top and gland covering the implant at the bottom of the breast.
What to do After Surgery
Immediately after surgery, Dr. Pittman will apply a dressing that will remain in place for 48 hours. Some tenderness and post-operative discomfort is expected and can be controlled with pain medications and muscle relaxers. Most patients are able to return to normal light activity within a few days. Some patients may experience a stretched, tight sensation after the surgery, but this usually subsides in a week. Swelling continues to go down over the next 4-6 weeks. Limited activity for the first couple weeks is recommended and will be discussed in your post-op visits.
